Summer Electrical Academy Puts Students on Career Path

The students and instructors of the Summer Electrical Academy 2026.

CCC will welcome 18 local high school students to campus on June 8 for the start of its first Summer Electrical Academy, an eight-week program designed to introduce students to high-demand careers in electrical systems technology.

The academy is part of Careers Electric™, a national workforce initiative launched by the Siemens Foundation to expand access to high-quality electrical training and help build the next generation of skilled electrical workers.

North Carolina was selected as the first state for implementation, with the North Carolina Community College System playing a leading role. The initiative is supported by a $9.2 million investment from the Siemens Foundation to help community colleges across the state offer electrical technology training.

CCC’s Summer Electrical Academy will run from June 8 through July 29, 2026, providing the participating high school juniors and seniors with a direct pathway into a high-demand, high-wage career field. Students will receive hands-on training in residential wiring, motors, and controls while earning college credit.

“This is more than a summer program,” said Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs at 91¿첥. “It’s an opportunity for students to explore a career that offers stability, strong earning potential, and meaningful work in our community.”

The 18 students, representing all six high schools in the county, and their families were welcomed during a kick-off event on May 26. The students signed pre-apprenticeship agreements, marking the beginning of their commitment to the program. Upon successful completion of the academy, students will receive college credit for both courses and a pre-apprenticeship certificate.

The academy prepares students for entry-level opportunities in residential electrical construction and electrical maintenance of motors and machinery. Participating students will also receive a $2,000 stipend, and those who need it may receive up to $350 in transportation assistance.

Thanks to the Siemens Foundation’s investment, 91¿첥 is helping remove financial barriers that can prevent students from exploring technical careers. The stipend and transportation support allow participants to focus on learning, gaining hands-on experience, and envisioning their future in a field that powers homes, businesses, and communities.

CCC Breaks Ground on Beam Student Center

CCC celebrated a major milestone on May 1 with a ceremonial groundbreaking for its new student center—an investment set to transform how students access support and services across campus.

The facility, to be named the Beam Student Center in honor of a historic $3 million gift from Don and Carla Beam, will serve as a centralized hub for student success. The 43,000-square-foot building will bring together key services such as admissions, advising, registration, financial aid, and other student supports in one convenient location.

“For years, student services have been spread across campus, making it harder than it should be for students to find what they need,” said Dr. Jason Hurst, president of 91¿첥. “The Beam Student Center will streamline that experience, helping us remove barriers, strengthen connections, and support students from enrollment through completion.”

In addition to the Beam family’s gift, the largest in the College’s history, several other donors were recognized for their contributions. Steve and Micki Padgett have named the Career Center, and David and Melissa White have named the Executive Conference Room. Because construction is fully funded by the North Carolina General Assembly, all private donations will directly support student scholarships.

The groundbreaking ceremony brought together state and local leaders, members of the College’s Board of Trustees, county commissioners, former trustees, faculty and staff, community donors, and special guest Dr. James Petty, the College’s first president.

Group of people posing with shovels at the box of dirt, preparing for the ceremonial shoveling.

Designed to serve as the “heart of campus,” the Beam Student Center will face Marion Street and feature a redesigned surrounding area that encourages pedestrian access and creates a more connected, welcoming environment for students and visitors.

“This building is about more than convenience—it’s about connection,” Dr. Hurst said. “It represents years of planning and a shared commitment to ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed.”

The project comes at a time of continued growth for the College. Later this month, 91¿첥 will celebrate its largest graduating class for the fourth consecutive year.

Once complete, the Beam Student Center will play a central role in shaping the student experience, providing a strong foundation of support from a student’s first visit to the moment they reach their goals.

Apprenticeship Cleveland Honors Graduates, New Apprentices

Apprenticeship Graduates 2025

CCC celebrated student achievement and local workforce growth during the Apprenticeship Cleveland annual graduation and signing ceremony held on Tuesday, November 18.

This year, the program recognized 10 graduates who completed their apprenticeships and earned certificates, diplomas, or degrees from 91¿첥, along with their Journeyworker certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor. “Congratulations to our graduates,” said Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs. “This is a major milestone, and we wish them continued success throughout their careers.”

The event also welcomed 29 new apprentices who are beginning their apprenticeship journey in a wide range of in-demand fields, including radiography, nursing, tool & die, maintenance, early childhood education, millwright, automation technician, electrician, and electrical and instrumentation.

“Becoming an apprentice is an important decision. It requires time and commitment,” said Mack. “That’s why we’ve chosen to hold this ceremony and celebrate the decision our students have made.”

During the ceremony, the College also welcomed two new employer partners: Carolina Care Health and Rehabilitation and Smile’z Childcare Center. Their participation strengthens the program’s growing network of industry partners throughout Cleveland County.

“Without our employer partners, Apprenticeship Cleveland would not be possible,” said Mack. “Because of them, our students can gain valuable skills to meet workforce needs.”

Established in 2017, Apprenticeship Cleveland was created to help local businesses and industries develop the skilled workforce they need to thrive. Apprentices complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training along with at least 144 hours of related instruction through 91¿첥. The program continues to grow each year, expanding opportunities for students while supporting economic development in Cleveland County and the region.

Foundation Donors Honor Dr. Dorothy “Dottie” McIntyre

The 91¿첥 Foundation recently gathered friends, colleagues, and community members in Keeter Auditorium for a special naming ceremony honoring Dr. Dorothy P. “Dottie” McIntyre. Dr. McIntyre is a cherished educator, leader, and friend whose 45 years of service helped shape the heart and mission of 91¿첥.

Dr. McIntyre began her 91¿첥 journey in 1970 and quickly became known for her dedication to students and her commitment to learning. Over the years, she served in many roles, including faculty member, department chair, academic dean, associate vice president for development, and assistant to the president for planning and institutional effectiveness. She officially retired in 2004, but her passion for teaching led her back to the classroom in 2008, where she continued to inspire students as an adjunct instructor until 2019. Her career reflects a lifetime spent lifting others and strengthening her community.

As the first Executive Director of the 91¿첥 Foundation, Dr. McIntyre laid the groundwork for the Foundation’s mission and structure. Her leadership helped establish a strong culture of giving that continues to open doors for students through scholarships and community support.

In recognition of her guidance and lasting impact, the Foundation dedicated the Dr. Dorothy P. McIntyre Office of the Executive Director in her honor. This dedication was made possible through a generous gift from Patty Dorian and her husband, Eino Lindfors. Dorian, a former student and employee of Dr. McIntyre, credits her longtime mentor for shaping both her career and her commitment to service. Their gift ensures that Dr. McIntyre’s leadership will continue to inspire future generations of students, educators, and partners in the community.

Dottie at the reception held in Dottie’s honor.

“Dottie’s name is woven into the very fabric of 91¿첥,” said Dr. Jason Hurst, president of 91¿첥, during the ceremony. “From the McIntyre Lobby to the Pennington McIntyre Gallery, and now the Office of the Executive Director, her influence can be felt in every corner of our campus.”

Dr. McIntyre’s impact reaches far beyond the College. A dedicated member of the Rotary Club of Shelby for more than 30 years, she was one of the club’s first female presidents. She also played a key role in naming the Rotary Center for Global Studies on 91¿첥’s campus. Her service truly embodies the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self,” as it connects local education to global perspectives.

Her work has been recognized throughout the region. Dr. McIntyre was honored as Distinguished Woman of the Year in 1997 by the Cleveland County Commission for Women and received the Athena Award in 2003 from the Cleveland County Chamber of Commerce. These awards highlight her professional excellence and her commitment to empowering others.

Through her vision, generosity, and unwavering belief in education, Dr. McIntyre helped build the cornerstone on which the 91¿첥 Foundation continues to grow today. Her legacy will guide the Foundation’s mission to expand access, support students, and strengthen the community she served with such dedication. Her name and spirit will continue to remind us that one person’s commitment can create opportunities for many.

Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Future

Event celebrates Dot Roark’s legacy and opens C19’s new studio

On Thursday, August 28, 2025, 91¿첥 celebrated a major milestone with the grand opening of the new home for C19, the College’s public access television channel.

Faculty, staff, students, and community members gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony that honored the channel’s rich history and looked ahead to its exciting future. Joining the celebration was Dorothy “Dot” Roark, whose leadership and vision helped launch C19 more than 40 years ago.

“Dot’s pioneer spirit, along with her talent, skill and training, helped elevate the image of this college,” said 91¿첥 President Dr. Jason Hurst. Roark, who began her career at 91¿첥 (then Cleveland County Technical Institute) in 1971, was also instrumental in building the advancement program that eventually became the CCC Foundation. Her impact will live on through the Dorothy Mulder Roark Endowed Fund, established through a generous estate gift she has pledged to the Foundation. The fund will provide lasting support for C19 and help maintain the high standards of programming and production she set in motion.

C19 had operated out of the John O. Harris, Jr. Broadcast Studio in the Bailey Allied Health Center since 2009. As the channel’s needs evolved over the years, 91¿첥 decided to relocate it to a more visible spot on campus. “This fabulous new space will allow us to continue producing community-based and educational programming for years to come,” Dr. Hurst said.

The move also creates new opportunities for students in health sciences. Relocating the studio frees up nearly 10,000 square feet in the Bailey Center, space that will be used to expand 91¿첥’s in-demand programs. Soon, the College will be able to welcome up to 200 Associate Degree Nursing students and 60 Practical Nursing students, along with expanding programs in radiography, surgical technology, and medical sonography.

The ribbon-cutting wasn’t just about opening doors to a new facility—it was about honoring the past, celebrating the present, and building a future where both C19 and 91¿첥’s health programs continue to thrive.
