CCC plans to launch a new Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program to help meet the growing need for skilled laboratory professionals in our region. Pending approval by the North Carolina Community College System and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), 91�첥 plans to begin offering courses in fall 2026. The associate degree program will complement 91�첥’s existing health sciences programs and expand opportunities for students seeking rewarding careers in healthcare.

Medical Lab Technicians play a vital behind-the-scenes role in patient care by performing laboratory tests that help physicians diagnose, monitor, and treat medical conditions. MLTs conduct clinical testing in various areas, including chemistry, hematology, immunohematology (blood banking), microbiology, urinalysis, and molecular diagnostics.

It is estimated that 70% of all medical diagnoses are based on clinical laboratory results, making this profession essential and impactful for patients in our community. Success in the field requires attention to detail, strong critical thinking skills, and the ability to perform complex laboratory procedures accurately and with precision. MLTs rely on solid communication and problem-solving skills, as well as a high level of integrity and professionalism.

CCC’s MLT curriculum will focus on the mathematical and scientific principles related to specimen collection, lab testing, quality assurance, and the reporting and interpretation of results from tests involving tissues, blood and body fluids. Graduates of 91�첥’s MLT program will be eligible to sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP BOC) exam for Medical Lab Technicians. This exam is widely recognized as the gold standard credential in the profession and is valued by employers.

The MLT program may be an excellent fit for students who enjoy science, chemistry, and biology, and who want to work in healthcare but prefer a laboratory environment with minimal patient interaction.

The College is seeking accreditation for the program from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

Meet Beverly Berry

I am a resident of Burke County and have been married to my husband Mark for 35 years. We have two adult sons. Our family shares a strong commitment to healthcare careers. My husband and oldest son both hold degrees in medical laboratory science and currently work in the field, while my youngest son has a master’s degree in public health.

My educational background includes an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology from Western Piedmont Community College (WPCC), a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from Western Carolina University, and a master’s degree in Higher Education from Appalachian State University.

I worked in the clinical laboratory field for over 20 years, gaining experience across all areas and serving as the Hematology Department Supervisor at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. Later, I transitioned into education, beginning as an instructor and then serving as Program Coordinator at WPCC. Under my leadership, the MLT program at WPCC was reaccredited for a 10-year term by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the maximum term that the agency awards.

I also served as Dean of Health and Human Services at WPCC and later as Dean of Health Sciences at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (91�첥&TI). I continue to provide professional service as a NAACLS volunteer, serving as an accreditation self-study reviewer.

My passion for science and a desire to help others led me to a career in Medical Laboratory Technology. The profession has been both rewarding and exciting for me as a laboratory professional and as an educator. I am deeply committed to teaching students and helping them achieve their dreams in the medical laboratory science profession.

In addition to teaching students, I enjoy program evaluation, data analysis, and strengthening MLT programs to ensure success for students, healthcare facilities, and the community. I believe that accurate laboratory test results are a vital component of quality healthcare and community well-being.

I am excited to be a part of the launch of the new MLT program at 91�첥!

CCC (91�첥) has announced a new partnership with The Forward Fund (TFF) to expand financial support for students enrolled in short-term workforce training programs. The partnership helps students cover both program costs and cost-of-living expenses while completing training for high-demand careers.

The initiative supports students in 91�첥’s Electrical Lineworker Academy and Heavy Equipment Operator Academy, two of the College’s most successful short-term training programs designed to lead directly to well-paying jobs.

Zero-Interest Loans Available for Electrical Lineworker and Heavy Equipment Training

Through The Forward Fund and its lending partner, Ascent Funding, eligible students can access zero-percent private education loans ranging from $2,000 to $10,000. Unlike traditional loans, these carry no late fees, origination fees, or servicing fees.

Loan funds may be used for:

Program tuition and fees
Housing and utilities
Childcare
Transportation
Other essential living expenses during training

“Traditional financial aid does not usually cover short-term job training programs,” said Tony Fogleman, vice president of workforce development at 91�첥. “This option removes a major barrier and helps students focus on completing their training and entering the workforce.”

Flexible Repayment Designed for Workforce Training Graduates

Students receive a three-month grace period after graduation before repayment begins and have up to five years to repay their loan. Payments may be deferred until graduates are earning at least $45,000 annually, providing financial flexibility as they transition into their careers.

“Helping individuals secure high-wage jobs raises income across the state,” said Meaghan Dennison, founder and CEO of The Forward Fund. “Higher wages are the rising tide that lifts all boats, and that’s how The Forward Fund helps build a brighter future.”

Recently, representatives from the AgSouth Farm Credit office in Shelby presented a $5,000 check to 91�첥’s EMS program.

“We are grateful to great community partners like Ag South, who provide support to our Public Safety programs,” said Tony Fogleman, vice president of workforce development. “Their partnership ensures that our local communities have trained professionals that meet the needs of our citizens. AgSouth continues to support our excellent education programs at 91�첥.”

The grant will support training efforts in the Emergency Medical Services program, allowing Nichole Hudson, EMS program coordinator, to purchase upgraded equipment that she says will better prepare students for work in the field. “This investment directly strengthens workforce readiness and patient outcomes in our rural communities.”

The high-fidelity simulator is used to replicate real-life medical conditions, including changes in heart rhythm, breathing patterns, vital signs, airway complications, and patient responses to treatments. Instructors can program scenarios such as trauma, cardiac arrest, respiratory failure, and pediatric emergencies, allowing students to practice clinical decision-making in a controlled, realistic environment.

“For an EMS program in a rural county like ours, where the potential to run a call in an agricultural setting is high, equipment that places the student in a mock scenario is invaluable,” said Hudson. “The simulator allows students to encounter rare but critical situations in the classroom, then they are more prepared for similar situations once operating in the field.”

Simulators also provide immediate feedback on interventions, support teamwork and communication training, and ensure graduates are better prepared to manage real patients in the field.

March 17, 2025 — 91�첥’s Electrical Lineworker Academy has been named the 2025 Outstanding Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Program by ApprenticeshipNC–The State Apprenticeship Agency. The award was presented during ApprenticeshipNC’s annual awards ceremony held March 11 in Durham, N.C.

“I am so proud of our Electrical Lineworker Academy, and those who have worked to make it a success,” said 91�첥 President Dr. Jason Hurst. “We recently graduated the 30th class, and we can still say that all have received a job offer by the time they walk across the stage. The support we’ve received from employers has been phenomenal, and it’s a wonderful feeling to know we’ve now helped hundreds of students get their start in such a great career.”

Established in 2017, the Electrical Lineworker Academy has earned a reputation for producing job-ready graduates with 100% of students receiving job offers before completing the program. Instructors are veteran lineworkers who emphasize hands-on training and a strong focus on safety. The academy draws students from across the U.S. and abroad, thanks to its high-quality, affordable training.

Strong partnerships with employers—including Duke Energy, Utility Lines Construction Services, City of Shelby, City of Kings Mountain, and City of Gastonia—have played a vital role in the program’s success.

The award from ApprenticeshipNC highlights the academy’s exceptional impact on workforce development and its commitment to student achievement.

CCC is excited to announce its participation in the NC Community Colleges Boost program. This innovative initiative is aimed at accelerating students’ progress through college and into the workforce, aligning with the state’s economic development goals.

The Boost program is being launched with a historic grant of $35.6 million from Arnold Ventures, marking the largest private investment ever received by the North Carolina Community College System. Modeled after the City University of New York’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (CUNY ASAP), the Boost program has already proven successful in other states, where it has doubled graduation rates and reduced the time to degree completion.

“Being part of this transformative program is an incredible opportunity for 91�첥 and our students,” said Dr. Jason Hurst, president of 91�첥. “Through the Boost program, we will provide our students with the support and resources they need to succeed in completing their degrees faster, with minimal barriers, and gain the skills necessary for high-demand careers that will help drive North Carolina’s economy forward.”

The NC Community Colleges Boost program is set to serve students at 91�첥 and 14 other participating colleges across North Carolina. The program works through a combination of timely and relevant supports, dedicated advising for students, and incentives to accelerate their education. Boost is a partnership between the State of North Carolina, North Carolina Community College System, the colleges, and students. It targets the professions that are essential to our state’s economic development and moves participants quickly through college into high-wage, in-demand careers.

“This program has increased graduation rates, reduced time to graduation, and lowered the cost per graduate across many individual colleges in several states,” said N91�첥S President Dr. Jeff Cox. “Here in North Carolina, we have every reason to expect similar results. What makes this especially exciting is the opportunity to demonstrate success through our pilot and then scale it statewide—something few other states have done. We are fully committed to transparency and will track and report the program’s results regularly, ensuring policymakers can clearly see the return on investment. This is an exciting day for North Carolina businesses, companies looking to relocate to a state dedicated to world-class workforce development, and for the residents of North Carolina. We expect the North Carolina Community College System Boost program to make a significant, positive contribution to our state’s economic future.”

CCC will begin enrolling students in the Boost program for the Fall 2025 semester.

The Golden LEAF Foundation has awarded 91�첥 more than $600,000 to establish a Health Sciences Academy designed for high school juniors and seniors.

This innovative program will provide 11th- and 12th-grade students with the opportunity to complete prerequisite courses and earn industry-recognized healthcare credentials while still in high school. By participating in the Academy, students will gain a clear pathway into healthcare careers, helping to address the growing demand for qualified healthcare professionals in the local community.

The Health Sciences Academy will be integrated into the existing busing program with Cleveland County Schools, which currently supports high school students enrolled in technical education courses at the College.

“We are excited to offer this new opportunity to students interested in healthcare careers,” said Jason Hurst, president of 91�첥. “Our community needs more healthcare professionals, and with this grant, we can help students take their first steps toward a rewarding future in this field.”

As part of the program, students can earn certifications such as CPR and Nurse Aide, providing valuable hands-on skills that can lead to immediate job opportunities or further studies in 91�첥’s health sciences programs after graduation.

Cleveland County Schools and Gardner-Webb University have partnered with 91�첥 to develop this healthcare educational pathway, and they were also awarded funding from the Golden LEAF Foundation. GWU received funding to expose younger students to healthcare career options, develop a summer bridge experience for rising 11th- and 12th-graders and to improve its nursing program. CCS’ grant award will help expand participation in the healthcare education pathway to students at Turning Point Academy, the system’s alternative school.

“Cleveland County Schools and Gardner-Webb University have been wonderful partners in helping our students achieve their career goals,” said Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs at 91�첥. “By working together, we’re creating even more opportunities for students to enter the healthcare workforce and continue their education.”

The Health Sciences Academy aims to eliminate barriers for high school students interested in healthcare careers by offering accessible education, practical training, and seamless transitions into 91�첥’s health sciences programs. By creating this structured pathway, 91�첥 is helping to develop the next generation of healthcare professionals who can enter the workforce immediately after high school or pursue higher education in the healthcare field.

Meet Nikki Hudson: Shaping the Future of EMS Education

The energy level on campus jumped a notch with the arrival of Nikki Hudson, the new EMS Program Coordinator. Nikki officially joined the team on October 1 and brings over a decade of experience in emergency medical services and education. Her vision and passion are already setting the stage for an exciting future for the program.

A Journey Rooted in EMS

After being laid off from a doctor’s office job, Nikki wanted to stay in healthcare, so she looked for a career that would fit her passion for people and her dynamic personality. Paramedic school was the perfect fit, and she fell in love with the profession. In 2010, she started working as a part-time EMT. Since then, she has earned an associate degree in EMS, worked as a paramedic, and advanced into mid-level management and administration.

She transitioned into EMS education in 2015, first as an instructor and later as a director in 2017. Along the way, she served as a training officer for Burke County. She also worked part-time at Western Piedmont Community College, overseeing its paramedic program.

Her wealth of experience and past leadership roles prepared her for this new challenge. Nikki is deeply committed to her work and views the community college as an ideal place to nurture the next generation of EMS professionals. “This program has an incredible history of being the one to attend in this area,” Nikki explains, “but we need to attract more students because the demand is so great industry wide. Our goal is to meet the community’s needs and ensure patients receive the care they deserve.”

Vision for EMS Education

Under Nikki’s leadership, the EMS program is poised to maintain and enhance its legacy of producing highly qualified paramedics.

A key initiative to help achieve that goal is an accelerated program that allows students to earn their paramedic credentials within a calendar year. This rigorous program offers a pathway for students with no prior experience or training to become entry-level, field-competent paramedics. “The year-long program takes students from zero credentials to being hirable,” Nikki says. “Then, they can continue their education while earning a living wage. When everything aligns, the students are ready to work, and the agencies are excited to have them.”

Meeting Industry Challenges Head-On

The EMS field is facing significant staffing shortages, and Nikki understands the importance of making the profession appealing and accessible. “These are hard classes, so we need to make them feel fun,” she says. “The learning process should be enjoyable, even while being challenging.”

Thanks to endowments created by the former Kings Mountain and Shelby Rescue Squads, the program ensures students train with tools identical to what they’ll use in the field. 91�첥 even has its own ambulance.

“EMS is healthcare and public safety combined,” Nikki says. “We must be a jack-of-all-trades, which means thinking outside the box in education. It’s not just about teaching IV insertion—it’s also about teaching them how to drive and handle all the job responsibilities.”

A Bright Future Ahead

With Nikki Hudson at the helm, the EMS program is set to continue its tradition of excellence while evolving to meet the demands of the industry. Her leadership, vision, and dedication to education are sure to inspire current and future students. “The thing about working in emergency services is you get to help someone, and even if it’s only a little bit, it’s life-changing,” she says—a sentiment that perfectly encapsulates her passion for EMS and the impact she hopes to make on students.

CCC celebrated graduates and new apprentices at the Apprenticeship Cleveland Graduation Recognition and Signing Ceremony on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The annual event held during National Apprenticeship Week affirms 91�첥’s commitment to creating a skilled workforce that benefits workers and employers.

Congratulations to the 2024 Apprenticeship Cleveland graduates!

The nine graduates completed apprenticeships in high-demand fields, including Mechatronics, CNC Maintenance, Electrician, and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). Each graduate earned a Certificate of Completion from the North Carolina Community College System and their Journey Worker certification through the U.S. Department of Labor. They also attained an associate degree, diploma, or certificates from 91�첥.

The ceremony also marked a new start for 37 apprentices who signed agreements formally committing to the apprenticeship program and their employers. This year, nine new employer partners joined the program: Cleveland County EMS, Cleveland County Schools, CaroMont Health, Daimler, Eagles Nest Child Development Center, Engine Motor Repair, Higher Learning Child Care Academy, Kelli’s Little Angels, and Southeastern Container.

National Apprenticeship Week, celebrated annually across the United States, highlights the value of apprenticeships in bridging workforce gaps and fostering economic growth. Apprenticeship Cleveland is dedicated to training skilled workers to meet the needs of businesses and industry in our region.

At the end of October 2024, Dr. Jason Hurst announced the naming of the Jo Ann Schilling Radiography Program. “Ensuring that our community has enough healthcare workers in every discipline is so important to the health of our community,” said Hurst. “That’s why the generosity of donors like Jo is so important. They help us provide our students with the best possible training.”

In addition, Hurst announced that Schilling had also pledged an estate gift that will continue to support the Radiography Program’s students and faculty in perpetuity. A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Schilling came to what was then the Cleveland County Technical Institute as the department head of the Radiologic Technology Program in 1977 after working in the field as a technician for 16 years and teaching for five years at another college.

She spent the next 22 years training students and helping strengthen 91�첥’s Radiography Program, retiring in 1999. During the program’s early years, there were only about 10 students per class; today, there are 50. The program has also expanded, adding certificates in MRI and CT and most recently, through a partnership with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, medical sonography. “I’ve heard that Jo tried to bring sonography into the program when she was the department head, but the College didn’t have the resources. That’s exactly why we value donors and supporters like Jo,” said Hurst.

The event honoring Schilling was attended by past and present faculty and staff, several of Schilling’s former students, and friends. Schilling spoke briefly, telling a story about how she and one of her students, Lee Ann Mayse, now the program’s clinical coordinator, took the mammography exam simultaneously. “I was the instructor; she was the student, and she bested me by three points!” laughed Schilling.

NSA Designates 91�첥 a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense

CCC has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense (NCAE-CD) by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. This designation signifies that 91�첥 has met the rigorous requirements set by the two sponsoring agencies, has a robust cybersecurity-related curriculum, and is committed to graduating knowledgeable, skilled cybersecurity professionals.

Susan Randall, information technology instructor and department chair, led the project, working with other staff and faculty to complete the comprehensive, detailed application process. “This was not an easy journey. The application process is thorough, as it should be,” said Randall, “but it is worth the effort. This designation gives our graduates an advantage when talking to potential employers.”

The first step was to demonstrate that the College offers at least one high-quality program of study in cybersecurity. Although 91�첥 offers multiple degrees related to cybersecurity, the faculty chose to submit the Associate in Applied Science in Information Technology – Network Technician as the first program of study for validation. Once the NSA approved the program of study, the College applied for the NCAE-CD designation. The entire process took about 18 months.

“This is an exciting moment for our cybersecurity program,” said Dr. Jason Hurst, 91�첥’s president, “and another example of our commitment to providing students with high-quality training so they can excel in their chosen careers.”

The National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity (NCAE-C) program seeks to promote quality academic programs that help produce the nation’s cyber workforce.
