Jordan Diggs, 91¿첥’s First Goodnight Transfer Scholar

CCC has a new reason to celebrate: Jordan Diggs has been named 91¿첥’s first-ever Goodnight Transfer Scholar.

Diggs was selected as part of North Carolina State University’s Goodnight Transfer Scholars Program Transfer Class of 2028 and will begin at NC State this fall, where he plans to major in Chemical Engineering.

The Goodnight Scholarship is one of NC State’s premier scholarship programs. It supports North Carolina students from low- and middle-income families who are pursuing degrees in STEM or STEM education. For transfer students, the scholarship is valued at $24,000 per year and is renewable for up to three years.

But the Goodnight Scholarship is more than financial support. Goodnight Scholars also take part in a comprehensive student development program that includes mentorship, weekly programming, community service, travel opportunities, enrichment grants, and personal and professional development.

This year, NC State announced 100 new first-year Goodnight Scholars in the Class of 2029 and 60 new Goodnight Transfer Scholars in the Transfer Class of 2028. Diggs is one of those 60 transfer students selected from across North Carolina.

For Diggs, the moment he learned the news was one he will never forget.

“As I sat there eating lunch on a Thursday, my phone began to ring,” Diggs said. “It was a number I did not recognize, but I immediately answered. It was at that point that I was made aware that I was a recipient of NC State’s Goodnight Scholarship.”

And like any excited 91¿첥 student with big news, he did not keep it to himself for long.

“I finished my food as quickly as I could, got up and ran straight to Dr. Mack’s office to inform him of the amazing news,” Diggs said. “After that, I proceeded to run around campus telling everybody who had supported me along the way.”

That moment was the result of years of hard work, perseverance, and support from the 91¿첥 community.

“At that moment, it felt like all of my hard work during my time at 91¿첥 had finally paid off and I would finally be able to continue my academic journey,” Diggs said.

Diggs’ path at 91¿첥 has been full of growth and opportunity. He first came to campus as a student-athlete. He leaves as much more.

“This journey sure has not been easy, and it definitely has not been conventional, but from my experience, that is what 91¿첥 is all about,” Diggs said. “When I first arrived at 91¿첥, it was as a student-athlete, and now as I leave, I do so as a student, coach, tutor, lab technician, maintenance technician, and integral part of the community around me.”

During his time at 91¿첥, Diggs said he was given opportunities that helped him grow both personally and professionally.

“Through each opportunity I was able to learn the importance of commitment and dedication to serving a community and bettering myself,” he said.

Diggs also credits the faculty and staff at 91¿첥 for helping him reach this milestone.

“Receiving endless support from all of the faculty and staff, I never felt like I was alone in this process,” Diggs said.

He offered special thanks to Dr. Bruce Mack and Academic Affairs; Dr. Elzbieta Wysocka and the Science Department; Nicholas Inman and the Math Department; Jerry Hopper and Adrian Hatch with TRIO; Becky Donaldson and the ACE Lab staff; Mr. and Mrs. Philip Webber of the Jive Turkey Café; Carlos George and the maintenance team; and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Jabarr Adams and Assistant Coach Ricky Minard.

As he prepares for his next chapter at NC State, Diggs plans to pursue Chemical Engineering as a career. He also hopes to continue his involvement with basketball, the sport that first brought him to 91¿첥, as a coach.

“The 91¿첥 community will always hold a special place in my heart,” Diggs said. “I one day hope to return.”

Congratulations, Jordan! 91¿첥 is proud to celebrate this historic achievement and excited to see all that you accomplish at NC State.

Academic Excellence Award Winner Rediscovers A Calling

Mallory McMahan-Cook is 91¿첥’s 2026 Academic Excellence Award winner.

On May 14, she graduated with a 3.85 GPA and an Associate Degree in Nursing.

McMahan-Cook described her time in the nursing program at 91¿첥 as “nothing short of transformative,” calling it a second chance at a career she hadn’t realized she needed. As a former U.S. Navy Corpsman, she explained that she had stepped away from healthcare after her military service, believing she had “hung up” her stethoscope for good. Returning to the field and starting over, she said, was humbling, but it also reignited a sense of purpose she hadn’t realized she was missing.

Mallory practices her skills in the nursing simulation lab.

She shared that 91¿첥’s nursing program reshaped her perspective on healthcare, teaching her that nursing goes beyond treating injuries or managing symptoms. Instead, she came to see it as a profession centered on offering hope, dignity, and a renewed outlook on life. Through her experience, she was reminded of how deeply people can influence one another through compassion, presence, and even the smallest acts of care—moments she noted often have the greatest impact.

She credited the unwavering support, mentorship, and dedication of the 91¿첥 nursing faculty with helping her rediscover her path. Without their guidance, she believes she might have overlooked the profound joy that comes from helping others heal. Because of their influence, she said, “I rediscovered a calling and gained the confidence to pursue the career I am truly meant to be in.”

Mallory, wearing her nursing scrubs, stands in the simulation lab and smiles at the camera.

CCC congratulates its long-standing partner, Greenheck Group, on receiving the Outstanding Employer Award from the North Carolina Work-Based Learning Association (NCWBLA). The award was presented during the Association’s annual conference held in Asheville on November 6, 2025.

The Outstanding Employer Award recognizes organizations that demonstrate exceptional commitment to work-based learning and make a lasting impact on students, communities, and the local economy.

Since 2007, Greenheck Group has been a valued partner of 91¿첥, creating meaningful educational and economic opportunities for students in Cleveland County. With five facilities located near the College, Greenheck has worked closely with faculty and staff to provide students with real-world learning experiences that bridge the gap between education and employment.

Through programs such as Apprenticeship Cleveland, Greenheck offers students the opportunity to earn while they learn—gaining hands-on skills, industry knowledge, and pathways to rewarding careers close to home. This collaboration benefits both students and local employers while strengthening the region’s economic foundation.

The Outstanding Employer Award was presented to Greenheck Group by Jaime Henderson, director of College and Career Readiness at 91¿첥. She nominated Greenheck for the award while she served as the Work-Based Learning coordinator. She was joined for the presentation by Sharon Nivens, director of Apprenticeships and Work-Based Learning, and Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of Academic Affairs. Accepting the award on behalf of Greenheck were Chuck Benton, Kamryn Spangler, and Alexander Self.

“Greenheck doesn’t just invest in programs; they invest in people,” Henderson said. “They believe that when you invest in people, you strengthen both your workforce and your community. That belief shows in everything they do.”

Greenheck’s leadership team actively supports workforce development initiatives through advisory committee service, hosting interns, participating in customized training, and engaging directly with students through facility tours, classroom visits, and mentorship opportunities.

Greenheck’s partnership with 91¿첥 exemplifies how collaboration between industry and education can build a stronger community. Their investment in 91¿첥’s students helps shape the workforce of tomorrow and fuels the growth of Cleveland County and beyond.

Apprenticeship Cleveland Honors Graduates, New Apprentices

Apprenticeship Graduates 2025

CCC celebrated student achievement and local workforce growth during the Apprenticeship Cleveland annual graduation and signing ceremony held on Tuesday, November 18.

This year, the program recognized 10 graduates who completed their apprenticeships and earned certificates, diplomas, or degrees from 91¿첥, along with their Journeyworker certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor. “Congratulations to our graduates,” said Dr. Bruce Mack, vice president of academic affairs. “This is a major milestone, and we wish them continued success throughout their careers.”

The event also welcomed 29 new apprentices who are beginning their apprenticeship journey in a wide range of in-demand fields, including radiography, nursing, tool & die, maintenance, early childhood education, millwright, automation technician, electrician, and electrical and instrumentation.

“Becoming an apprentice is an important decision. It requires time and commitment,” said Mack. “That’s why we’ve chosen to hold this ceremony and celebrate the decision our students have made.”

During the ceremony, the College also welcomed two new employer partners: Carolina Care Health and Rehabilitation and Smile’z Childcare Center. Their participation strengthens the program’s growing network of industry partners throughout Cleveland County.

“Without our employer partners, Apprenticeship Cleveland would not be possible,” said Mack. “Because of them, our students can gain valuable skills to meet workforce needs.”

Established in 2017, Apprenticeship Cleveland was created to help local businesses and industries develop the skilled workforce they need to thrive. Apprentices complete a minimum of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training along with at least 144 hours of related instruction through 91¿첥. The program continues to grow each year, expanding opportunities for students while supporting economic development in Cleveland County and the region.
